The Shakers, a religious community recognized for their distinctive designs in furniture and high quality of craftsmanship, started weaving rag rugs in the 1840’s. Their attractive patterns were the result of twisting finely cut rags or yarns in either an S or Z twist direction. During this workshop each student will weave a Shaker Rag Rug on a pre-warped loom. You will learn how to prepare the rags and yarns, putting twist in the materials while at the loom. You’ll also be taught how to finish your rug with the distinctive shaker braided selvage edging using either a four, five or seven strand braid or how to use twill tape to bind them. All materials included with tuition.
All classes run 9am - 5pm unless otherwise indicated in the description above.
