We are so happy to be welcoming to the Glen our students, customers and community for our 7th annual Red Stone Glen Open House. This year we are happy to have a list of new & some returning faces to bring our guests free education programs that are sure to inspire. Come for a short visit or stay the whole day June 18th, 2022  from 10 am – 4 pm.

New Products in the store and silent auction!

It wouldn’t be open house without new products in the store that you normally wouldn’t find; hot new notions, kits, books, Red Stone Glen weaving patterns and more.

 

 

 

After last year’s success we will be having another silent auction for some awesome gift baskets our staff and volunteers have put together featuring their favorite products, favorite manufacturer’s swag and a few fun surprises you won’t want to miss!

Ways to find Joy!

Crackle Weave with Susan Kesler-Simpson

Susan Kesler-Simpson is passionate about fiber arts and breaking down complex weaving techniques so that even

beginners can learn the basic concepts. She is the author of the successful Overshot Simply, Shadow Weave Simply, and Creative Treadling with Overshot, and has a B.S. and M.A. in Clothing, Textiles, and Design from the University of Nebraska. She enjoys teaching weaving and working in other crafts such as knitting, spinning, and crocheting. She resides in Danville, Pennsylvania.

During her time with us she will be discussion and demonstrating crackle weave techniques from her new book due to shelves in July. Don’t worry, guests will get a sneak peak in the book and an opportunity to pre-order before it hits stores!

Crochet Hand Spun, Artsy, Textured, Funky Yarns with Bobbi Hayward

Crochet with Handspun, artsy, textured, funky yarns? How about with hard, scratchy, or sample yarns? And what about over-twisted yarns?

YES!  You can.

Three basic crochet stitches – chain stitch, slip stitch, and single crochet. See and learn how to make bags, scarves,cowls and more.  Demos and mini-lessons throughout the day.

FREE Tie-Dye Experience

Join our amazing tie-dye duo Olivia & Monica as they guide guest through the tie-dye experience. All guests are encourage to stop by, have a look and learn a little about the process. If you feel like rolling up your sleeves, purchase a t-shirts and jump right in! Additional supplies will be available for purchase should you want to go home and share your new skills with your friends at home.

Valais Blacknose Sheep

Pam Campbell from Spooky Nook Farm will be joining us along with her Valais Blacknose Sheep for the first time ever.

The Valais Blacknose Sheep are considered not only to be one of the friendliest breed, but have gained the recognition and title of “The World’s Cutest Sheep!” Their amazing images have taken social media and the world by storm. With long white spirals of shaggy wool and adorable blackfaces along with an extra sociable personality – it’s easy to see why millions have fallen in love with the Valais Blacknose.

Increasing public demand to learn more about this rare breed and obtain these gentle giants is documented in countless media articles and we have a wonderful opportunity to meet them in person, including some bottle babies… what could be better!!

Spinning Flax

Demonstration of the preparation and spinning of flax on the home spinning wheel.

Flax Processing with Ron Tyler a New York native that learned the art of Hand spinning wool and flax in 2007, including 19 century flax history and spinning. This began his journey into the fiber world and antique spinning wheel collection. Ron will discuss and demonstrate the process of flax, from flax straw to linen thread spinning on antique wheels.

PA German Tape Weaving

Local author and weaver Susan Weaver will be returning to wow our guests with her amazing collection of band looms and demonstrate the art of simple band weaving who’s origins stem from right here in the heart of Pennsylvania.

Try to Spin Demo Booth

Spinners of ALL ages are asked to join the Red Stone Glen staff to try your hand at spindle or wheel spinning. Guests from young to “well aged” will receive a short introduction to the equipment, fibers used and how the spinning process occurs. With no previous experience needed or expectations in place, have a blast trying your hand at making your own yarn.

For those who simply fall in love allow our knowledgeable staff to guide you through the decision making process to determine what type of spindle or wheel will be the best fit for you. With a showroom full of all major manufacture’s wheels to try, you can purchase with confidence.

Little Looms Tent

Come, play and learn all about little looms from inkle to muti-harness table looms, we have them all! Take a moment to talk to our knowledgeable staff about what loom might be right for you or cure some curiosity about what everyone is buzzing about.

Food

Need a tasty treat while here, local bread makers Talking Breads will be bring lots of good to cure your sweet tooth including, but not limited to;

  • Pasties w/ carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic and rosemary
  • Cranberry apricot scones
  • Chocolate chip cookies
  • Rhubarb turnovers
  • Sticky buns

 

If you plan to spend the day, please feel free to pack a picnic or charcuterie platter for you and your friends. Alcoholic drinks are permitted on campus, but please drink responsibly. Please look for receptacles to properly dispose of your waste and recyclables.

Parking

If you have not attended one of our events in the past, please note that all parking will be located in our lower meadow, and volunteers will help direct you. If you need assistance making your way to the Ridge or the main studio, please look for our marked pick-up locations where you can hitch a ride on one of the golf carts making the circuit around campus. Golf carts may also be used to help transport your small loom or spinning wheel, transport merchandise purchases to your vehicle or just feel the breeze through your hair as you tour the grounds in style.

Shopping

The retail store will be open for guests to visit, but we will be again be making some modifications moving a large percentage of the store outside and limiting the number of customers in the store at a time. Staff will be on hand assisting customers with questions and controlling the number of guests inside at a time. Don’t worry there will be books to browse on your way in to help bide the time while you wait.

We will also have on display some of the new products from our Red Stone Glen Gear Virtual Store where all products can be customized to your size and color preference!
