Boundweave has led us to another weft faced twill weave known throughout Scandinavia as Krokbragd. Boundweave is typically woven as a four shaft twill. The treadling sequence is a balanced 2/2 twill. This gives an equally balance color appearance on both sides of the runner or rug. Krokbragd is different. Krokbragd is a 2/1 twill. It is threaded over three shafts and typically to a point twill. An observation of an example of Krokbragd shows a tightly woven front surface and longer weft floats on the back of the piece that have a blocky appearance. Although you could say that the weave structure is reversible, it is often the more tightly woven and crisper looking side that is thought to be the correct side. In the past, Krokbragd rugs were used as bed coverings and also used as wall rugs. They not only provided the home with beautiful art to look at but also helped to prevent cold drafts from coming into the room from the outside.
Large looms with a heavy beater helped to beat and pack the weft materials into the coarsely spaced warp making the rug weft faced. Today, many of us with smaller and lighter weight looms can still enjoy weaving Krokbragd by sampling and weaving the technique into mats and runners for your table. Finer threads will work also work for geometrically pattered wall hangings. Yet, if you do have a large framed loom with a heavy beater, there is nothing more satisfying than weaving a rug for your home in this technique. Looms are pre-warped and all materials are included with your tuition. A temple is suggested as part of your bring letter, but not necessary.
