Unlocking the Mysteries of 19th Century Drafts

About class

In this hands-on class students will unlock the mysteries of the 19th century weavers’ drafts. Students will explore handwritten drafts from Pennsylvania German manuscripts. Many are written in profile form and the tie-up reveals the weave structure and you are expected to figure out the treadling. For the Appalachia drafts, written on strips of paper, students will only get the threading draft with no tie-up or treadling. Some of the English drafts are also handwritten, but others were published. We will explore what they have in common and how they are different.
