Paper Spinning

About class

Kami-Ito and Shifu

Japanese paper spinning and weaving

The tradition of making cloth from hand spun paper developed in rural Japan in the 1600’s. Cloth was rustic and sturdy for everyday use, or fine and delicate for ceremonial garments. This class will take a contemporary approach to this traditional art.

Combining basic spinning and weaving skills, we will explore the traditional Japanese art of creating yarn from mulberry paper(kami-ito) and then using it to weave a cloth on a pre-warped loom (shifu).

Day 1 will be hand painting, cutting and spinning the paper. Day 2 will be weaving a table runner to show off the beauty of the handcrafted paper yarns. Bring a spinning wheel and a pre-warped table loom will be provided.
