PA German Tape Weaving

About class

Hand woven tape ribbon was vital to the lives of Pennsylvania German farm families throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In pre-zipper days, because of their strength and colorful patterns, these long, narrow bands of cloth were used traditionally for many tying needs, such as men’s suspenders, garters, apron straps, and drawstrings for women’s petticoats. This class explores the history of this traditional tape. Students warp different styles of tape looms and in a round robin format will weave historical patterns of tape ribbon. Samples of contemporary tape will give students many ideas for functional and holiday tapes. Box tape looms, handmade by a regional tape loom maker will be sold to continue weaving up lots of tape ribbon after the workshop. All materials included with tuition.
