Designing with Braids

About class

Designing Clothing and Accessories with Braids – This is a project based class for using a braiding stand and bobbins, braiding disk, or takadai. Japanese or Andean braids can be the star of the show for a jacket or handbag, or they can play a supporting role. Get experienced help with design decisions. Bring your ideas, and any bits and pieces that you have (swatches of handwoven, knitted, or commercial cloth, braid samples, buttons, yarns, pattern books, etc.). Terry will cover important designing skills, like managing color interaction, choosing yarns, and choosing braid designs to do particular jobs like making button loops or garment edgings, calculating take-up for long warps, etc. Bring your braiding stand or card, and yarns that you would like to incorporate. You will leave the class confident about your design plan and ready to start. Bring your braiding equipment for sampling. For the finishes our text will be Sling Braiding Traditions and Techniques, From Peru, Bolivia, and Around the World, by Rodrick Owen and Terry Flynn. Our new book has an entire chapter devoted to beginnings, endings, and finishes, the details you need in order to incorporate braids into your designs.)
